I grew up through the 80's and I can barely tolerate the music. Some songs I like, only for nestalgia reasons.

I think they're on to something
Junebugg,
Pammy, and
Deb are on to something.
It's not what's on the outside that makes a woman sexy. It's what's on the inside.
I'm no model. Hell, I could probably be two of them given the current size for models, but that doesn't mean I can't look and feel sexy.
My husband seems to agree.
So why do we do this to ourselves? Current research suggests that thin isn't all it's cracked up to be, and that what we call "moderately overweight" is more healthy. Doesn't that mean we should rethink what we call fat? Until the advent of TV our idea of "fat" was radically different than it is today....
What do you think?

I'm with you there

As long as we can agree on no thin bashing. I can't help it that I'm thin, but my father's sisters sure made my life hell for being so. We had to live with them and my grandmother when I was in my late teens and they hated my mum, and they despised me, and they made sure I knew it. That's the short, non-TMI version

I rarely talk about it because it still can make me all queasy inside.

Definitely no thin bashing. My mom has always been skinny as a rail. On the otherhand... I'm what most people would consider 'pleasantly plump'. I like it. I'm comfortable with it. I have never been nor will ever be a model. Then again, I do think you can be too overweight. Particularly as you get older.

I agree. There's a difference between healthy and unhealthy, and frankly, that's different for every person. My body is healthy at a weight that would be associated with heart disease and limited mobility for a lot of people, but before my RA, I played sports and hiked.

Honey, you know what I say... As long as the Dr. says that you are ok, and that YOU feel ok, I love you all the same. I love you very much, that is all I have to say.

I'd say it shows the level of one's thinking, deep vs. shallow. The more you spend time considering what are the best attributes in a mate (I, being male) it becomes more and more clear that physical attraction, while necessary, ranks far below all the character attributes.
(Geez, after reading that it sounds so clinical. Do I always sound like that? Argh.)

A lot of my struggle is loving myself even though I have a medical problem that everyone assumes is caused by my weight (I'm not so certain that it is). So I go straight up a wall when I get "it's ok to be fat if you're healthy." :-( Overly touchy, I know, but hey, that's me this morning.
Ith, never thin bashing. Never.
Paladin, my husband *is* physically attracted to me, it's not something he compromised on because he likes my personality, though being attracted to a whole person and not just a physical attribute or two is no doubt part of it.
Good Lord, I sound cranky today. Yikes. Sorry about that.

And there's a difference between overweight and morbidly obese. People who can't even really walk because they weigh so much and they have to use a scooter. And when you have a dear friend nearing that point, a friend you want to be around when you're little old ladies together, it puts weight into a great deal of perspective.
Posted by: Ith at June 07, 2005 11:34 AM (8CL1r)

A slippery slope no doubt. It seems to me though that given the state of obesity in America, the last thing we need to is give Americans a reason to be "moderately overweight".
Posted by: ap at June 07, 2005 01:47 PM (u5Cu4)
9
Well, that's why any generic metric of weight=health is going to go wrong. Better measures are pulse, BP, cholestrol, blood sugar, etc. which actually measure whether someone has healthy heart, lungs, liver, kidneys, pancreas, etc.
If we reset the metric to what it was 40 or 50 years ago, far fewer people would be considered obese.

My mother has always been one of those types of women who couldn't gain an ounce of weight no matter what she ate.
I, on the other hand, can LOOK at a Twinkie™ and I may as well have rubbed it on my hips.
Not really. . .I was always relatively thin -- until I hit 35-40. Now, I have what I prefer to refer to as a "Rubenesque" figure.
When I was depressed and miserable -- I was thin. (Depression for me = no eating.) When I'm happy, I don't miss too many meals.
And I'm ecstatically happy with my life, my darling husband, and my boys.
Hence, I have probably about 20-30 too many pounds on my frame.
My husband doesn't seem to be turned off by it (thank GAWD) so. . .I will exercise it off or I won't. I talk a lot about feeling uncomfortable at how I look but the truth is: I've NEVER liked how I look. It's just recently that I've ceased to give a shit about what other people think about me. If those that are near and dear to me think I'm okay -- then I'm okay.
xoxo

Right. These things don't necessarily correspond with weight, nor are they necessarily caused by weight even if they exist in an overweight person. Sometimes losing weight can help. Sometimes it doesn't. *shrug*

Ever since I saw the photo of the "Cosmo" cover girl from the back during a photo shoot, with a cheap piece of cardboard, cut all crooked with scotch tape on some of the edges, stuck into her poofy over-styled hair, holding the hair WAY out to the sides so it looked all full and lush and thick FROM THE FRONT ANGLE where the photo was being taken from, I've disabused myself of the notion that anything the media serves me about how women out there look is "real." Instead, I now believe what I see at the mall: and I just see regular sort of women there. Some a little chunky or plumpish, some kinda skinny, some obese, and everything in between. Nobody, and I mean nobody, has friggin' cardboard taped to their hair.

Calling all classical music lovers...
Starting Tuesday, the BBC will be offering all 9 of Beethoven's symphonies for FREE AND LEGAL download!!!
Here's the schedule:
"Symphonies 1 & 3 will be broadcast on Monday 6th June, and available to download from Tuesday 7th June to Monday 13th June.
Symphonies 2, 4 & 5 will be broadcast on Tuesday 7th June, and available to download from Wednesday 8th June to Tuesday 14th June.
Symphony 6 will be broadcast on Monday 27th June, and available to download from Tuesday 28th June to Monday 4th July.
Symphony 7 will be broadcast on Tuesday 28th June, and available to download from Wednesday 29th June to Tuesday 5th July.
Symphony 8 will be broadcast on Wednesday 29th June, and available to download from Thursday 30th June to Wednesday 6th July.
Symphony 9 will be broadcast on Thursday 30th June, and available to download from Friday 1st July to Thursday 7th July."
Beethoven is my favorite classical composer, so I'm psyched. I don't actually have all of the symphonies.
Quick bit of trivia: Symphony #3 is entitled "Eroica" and was originally dedicated to Napoleon.... Of course, after Waterloo, Beethoven scratched Napoleon's name out the original score so hard that he ripped the page....
Drop by and indulge

Still "It".....
Gir tagged me with this meme a couple of weeks ago, but as you know, life intervened. So here goes.....
1) Total number of films I own on DVD/video:
Ummm.... a couple hundred? I own a LOT of them. Two movie tickets is often more expensive than buying the DVD, especially if you pick it up in the first 3 days after it comes out (usually the $14-16 range)... AND you can watch them again. We rarely go out to the flicks.
2) The last film I bought:
Team America: World Police. (F*ck yeah!)
3) The last film I watched:
Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back
4) Five films that I watch a lot or that mean a lot to me:
Star Wars (A New Hope)
Return of the Jedi
LotR: Fellowship of the Ring
Real Genius
Blazing Saddles
(they all do duty in the DVD player in the bedroom because they cure my insomnia....)
5) Tag 5 people and have them put this in their journal/blog:
Naah... almost everyone else has been it. If you want to be "tagged" drop me a comment and claim your spot

Ok, not the greatest bit of writing of all time, but it is highly amusing.

My currrent swear word of choice can't even be mentioned here. Suffice it to say that a) it's infinitely worse than "bitch", and b) my bosses' construction potty-mouths have formed my ever-malleable and impressionable construction engineer mind.
But for general NERS consumption, I submit the following fuck-variations: Fuckwad, Fuckrod, Fuckstick, Fucklord, Fucktard, Fucknut, Fuckhole. See? aren't those better variations than the trite and tired Fuckhead and Fuckface?

Children are the best birth control EVER....
So, flying from LA to Phoenix there was a 5 year old behind me. I was in the window seat, the middle was empty and DH was on the aisle. The kid's mom was in the middle and someone else was on the aisle.
I'm thinking, it's only an hour, it won't be a problem. WRONG.
For those of you lucky enough to have never flown out of LAX, take-off is over the water. That kept the kid occupied for about 10 minutes, then....
To find out the rest, read the extended entry....

Kids know an idle threat when said. Even at 2, my son knows if I mean it or not. I have had to spank him when I really didn't mean for it to be that bad, but told him I would if he did it. Sucks, but I don't want my kids ending up like that. UGH! I am so sorry you had to deal with it.

Your story is exactly why I don't take my kids on planes. My in-laws offered to fly us to kansas this summer and I turne down the tickets. I could just see clone jumping all over the place. If I needed to discipline him I don't want to subject the cabin to a good 30 minute crying/screaming performance. Plus I don't want to hear from other people how "I'm abusing my child".
I had your seat last November on a flight from Chicago to Dallas Fort Worth. *I* however turned around and got on the kid and the parent. The sounds of quiet sobbing from the brat made a relaxing rest of the trip.

Last year, my husband and I flew from Georgia to California (and back again a week later) with our two boys, who were then 5 years old and six months old.
Aside from the six-month-old's impatience with waiting for me to adjust him, baby carrier, shawl, and my shirt so that he could be fed without me flashing the passengers, we didn't have any trouble.
It helped that the five-year-old had his Gameboy with him, and he already knew from previous experience that if he misbehaved, we'd take it away from him.
I wouldn't want to try it again any time soon, though. The younger one is turning out to be much more rambunctious, and less easily entertained
quietly, than the older one was.

Flying from San Francisco to Tokyo, I sat behind a Japanese couple and their son. That’s a long flight; I slept. Suddenly, something seemed, I don’t know, odd. I opened my eyes. No glasses.
The little boy had them, twisting them into Möbius strips, giggling with insane glee. I squinted, took them back, tried to straighten them, and looked at the parents in exasperation. They chuckled, bobbing their heads, and lifting their hands in the air. You know, that what-can-you-do shrug? They gave me that, then they ignored me for the next four hours.
Yet that didn’t deter me. Oh, no. I went ahead and had kids of my own (well, my wife had definite ideas, and I didn’t object). In my heart, though, I know why: Someday, somewhere, I don’t know when, I don’t know how, my children are going to find that family, hopefully on a trans-Pacific flight. Then they will suffer! Oh, how they will suffer.
My children are trained to endlessly recount obscure
Star Wars trivia, quote random Terry Pratchett passages, and repeat “King of the Hill” dialogue. And my enemies will suffer! Mwah-ha-ha-ha-ha!

The Nixonians weigh in
Not surprisingly, the group of bright, once-young men who once made up Nixon's staff and have manged to stay alive and out of jail were making the rounds, talking about Mark Felt (how's that for a
pRon name????) and the legacy of Deep Throat and the end of the Nixon presidency.
Pat Buchanan was on Imus this morning, and he and Charles Colson have been all over MSNBC declaring that Deep Throat is not an American hero, but rather a misguided, if not vengeful schemer who violated the ethics of his position, something he would later be tried for in another matter, and brought down a presidency that had the potential to continue to do good.
Ben Stein echoes this theme in today's American Spectator, asking why Deep Throat is Nixon's legacy, rather than opening the door to China and building peace in Vietnam and elsewhere.
Former Nixon chief of staff, Al Haig told The Australian and FoxNews that it was good to "finally be off the list" of suspects.
