Big Changes are on tap....
My one-year-as-a-Munuvian anniversary is a little over a week away, and to celebrate, this space is about to undergo a major change! A little old, a little new, a little borrowed, and a lot of blue.... (well, blue-purple)
Still have some bugs to fix (IE SUX!!!), but I may just decide to say "Screw it" and force y'all to adopt Firefox!

This is firefox:
http://www.mozilla.com/firefox/
It's a browser that has cool things like a built in google search bar, and tabbed browsing, which allows you to have multiple pages open in the same program. Basically you don't get loads and loads of Explorer windows open at the same time taking up all the space in your taskbar, and you can compare, cut and paste and quote from different pages all in one window. Winner!

Help a Sister Out
Dana of
The Origin of Soul has been fighting her own personal war with Dell since
THEY ruined her still-under-warranty computer.
She's tried just about everything to get this resolved. Methinks she needs a lawyer to call them up and threaten.
Anybody got some advice for her?
Drop by here. (Come on you BFLers. I know we have a ton of lawyers, somebody should be able to give her some good advice!)

Sounds like there's not a problem with the computer; just an incomplete use of a recovery CD and a the result of unclueful support meeting admittedly anticlueful owner.
I went over there looking for a horror story in which the computer was physically bad and not being replaced, but I see a pretty ordinary scenario in which the driver knowing about things like oil changes and tire air pressure would help prevent disappointment with the mechanic.
Posted by: Jay at March 25, 2006 02:44 AM (/05va)
2
That said, if I were her I would be chasing Dell for one thing: Office. If they put some kind of a trial version on there and it's not on the recovery or other CD, and that was not clear, they should send her a copy on the double. And a clear-speaking tech in the US should help her get the drivers reinstalled so stuff like her sound works.
Posted by: Jay at March 25, 2006 02:47 AM (/05va)
3
Also, I saw no indication of what the original problem was for which she was talking to Dell support, except that it involved checking to see whether her CD drive would read a CD, in which she learned about "autorun." Obviously whether that is solved would have some bearing on her concerns, but it sounds like she's mainly mad about the collateral damage.

There's more to it than that, but the story takes too damn long to tell.

Ok, something interesting to post about
Prof. Reynolds
laments a fellow law professor who is getting grief for banning laptops from his class.
He points out that several of his colleagues are fed up with them too, mostly because they encourage goofing off and can be a major disruption if the students don't have the volume off.
Not to mention that a million keys clicking is HIGHLY disconcerting when you're trying to talk.
Our school has a unique solution to this problem. We have two classrooms equipped with computer consoles for each student and
this technology.
SMART Board also incorporates a functionality that allows the user at the front of the classroom to LOCK OUT the other consoles, forcing the students to follow along with the lecturer, although it allows them to use the software to make notes, which can be emailed to the user or printed at the end of the class.
We love our SMART Boards, and we have them in every classroom.

Wow that's a really cool idea. Although sometimes it pays to sit near someone with a laptop. I know I only managed to stay awake during one of my programming classes because I would watch the guy, who sat in front of me, play halo.

I tried handwriting notes for about two weeks in law school (I had done it in undergrad, not that it's comparable) and said forget it. There's so much info in first year class, particularly, that you need to take notes the fastest way possible. Not only that, but it allowed me to actually look back at my notes at the end of the semester to figure stuff out (something that I never really had to do in undergrad or HS) - there were days when I had three or four pages of typed notes per class, there is no way that those would have been anywhere near legible.
Yeah, we would IM each other and surf the web during the dryer moments of class, but we also used the net to answer questions that the prof didn't necessarily have the answer for.

You Are Guinness |

You know beer well, and you'll only drink the best beers in the world.
Watered down beers disgust you, as do the people who drink them.
When you drink, you tend to become a bit of a know it all - especially about subjects you don't know well.
But your friends tolerate your drunken ways, because you introduce them to the best beers around.
|
Oh yeah. Seeing as how this is about the ONLY beer I'll drink. And my favorite to cook with, too.

Okay who ever wrote that quiz knows nothing about beer. (Almost as bad as the martini quiz, which if done properly would only have one possible solution to any grouping of answers) Honestly how can you mention beer with out A) Germnay or B) Belgum, where the best beers in the world is made.
Now I do like my Guiness too, but its got nothing on any Belgian Beer (side note, there are some Canadian Belgian-Style beers that are pretty decent too).

I see that you and I have something in common. Of course, it has to be beer since our favorite collegiate teams are bitter rivals.

What the Pirate said. I may be a Bostonian with the obligatory fondness for the Guiness every now and then, but, please, I spent six months in Brussels, too. A poll on beer with mentioning Belgium is like a poll on pasta without mentioning Italy: it's just completely absurd.
My results came back Guiness, of course, but give me Hoegaarden.

You are a one of a kind, original person. There's no one even close to being like you.
Expressive and creative, you have a knack for making the impossible possible.
While you are a bit offbeat, you don't scare people away with your quirks.
Your warm personality nicely counteracts and strange habits you may have.

I suppose I woud have preferred Emerald or Forest, but hell, it wasn't Olive, right?
And interestingly enough, the bridesmaid dresses at my wedding were approximately the darker color in the picture above. Although that was a combination of price, available sizes and acceptable style more than the color. Which is a bitch to match shoes to.

Paging Dr. Google
As many of you know, Dilbert cartoonist (and blogger) Scott Adams has a dystonia which prevents him from drawing without the aid of a computer. About a year ago he started having problems speaking in public as well.
None of the remedies prescribed by the doctors seemed to be working, and one day he realized that the voice problems he was experiencing might be tied to his dystonia. So he asked Dr. Google, who returned the result "Spasmodic Dysphonia", an extremely rare condition resulting in voice changes very similar to what he was experiencing, and to top it off, this condition was more likely to co-occur in people experiencing dystonias.
Here is Scott's account of his search for a doctor who would actually test for the Zebra, even though the entire stable of horses were absent. With a correct diagnosis he's now able to resume public speaking, even if the treatment is a little grody....
What's interesting about the story isn't merely that the doctors were unwilling to listen, but rather it highlights what could have happened if the patient in question wasn't a famous artist with access to a doctor specializing in his particular disorder. Imagine the merry-go-round of drugs, tests, and therapies any of us regular joes might have gone through. Imagine what might have happened if he hadn't had the computer skills to look for what he was experiencing.
Are our doctors willing to go the extra mile? To sort through every possibility in the differential diagnosis to find the right answer? To listen carefully when a patient says "These are my symptoms, and it says here that I could have
this"?
Kinda makes you think, huh?

It's been my experience that doctor's seldom listen. I spent three years trying to convince a team of doctor's that I had PCOS. They ruled out everything else first.
Why? Because I wasn't a doctor. I was just a woman who knew her own body. I interview my doctor's very carefully now...and either they let me actively participate in my own care, or I look elsewhere. You are your own best advocate!!

I grew up watching my mum be told that whatever was wrong with her was all in her head when the doctors couldn't figure it out. It wasn't until a few years ago she was finally diagnosed. And gee, it wasn't all in her head. Go figure.
